A practical Laravel security checklist

Laravel is secure by default, but only if you use it properly. Use this checklist before every launch.

The framework protects you from many common attacks, but a few settings and habits are still up to you. Run through this list before going live.

Configuration

  • Set APP_DEBUG=false and APP_ENV=production on the live server.
  • Keep the .env file out of version control and out of the public folder.
  • Force HTTPS and use secure cookies.

Data and input

  • Validate all input with form requests.
  • Use Eloquent or query bindings, never raw string-built SQL.
  • Protect models with $fillable to prevent mass-assignment problems.
  • Escape output. Blade does this by default with {{ }}.

Access control

  • Hash passwords (Laravel does this with bcrypt or Argon2).
  • Use policies and gates so users only reach their own records.
  • Rate limit login and password-reset routes.
  • Add two-factor authentication for admin users.

Files and dependencies

  • Validate file type and size, and store uploads outside the public folder where possible.
  • Run composer audit and keep Laravel and packages updated.

Monitoring

Log errors, watch for unusual activity and keep regular, tested backups.

The bottom line

Security is a habit, not a one-off task. We include a security review on every Laravel project we deliver.
